Not long ago, patients remained in hospital for the entire length of their illness or surgery and recovery. This resulted in them being in the hospital environment when they medically had no need, other than convalescing. Fast forward to our current post COVID pandemic state where hospital beds are at a premium, and the home care service provision sector provides post operative care at home.
Post operative care
Post operative defines the state following an operation. Many of us are faced with needing to have operations from time to time which in itself can increase stress and anxiety. Stress and anxiety however, are not conducive to a good recovery. Immediately following surgery
We are all made aware of the discomfort we may experience post operatively as well as any post operative complications that may occur. Modern surgery is far less risky than it used to be, however, clients may still experience discomfort such as:
- a sore throat from the surgical tube placed in situ to enable breathing whilst under anaesthetic,
- nausea and vomiting as a reaction to the anaesthesia,
- constipation as a result of certain medications,
- pain and a feeling of “tightness” around the incision site, and
- difficulty sleeping and moving.
Post operative complications
Post operative complications are always taken into consideration and although most often there are none, sometimes they can occur and may include:
- post-surgical shock due to a reduction in blood pressure and resultant blood flow, requiring immediate response
- haemorrhage from the incision site. A rapid loss of blood from the incision site can elicit a shock response because the loss of blood reduces the body’s blood pressure,
- infection as the incision has breached the body’s protective barrier (the skin) exposing it to the outside elements,
- DVT (deep vein thrombosis) a blood clot that can form in the periphery and travel to the lungs were it can form a PE (pulmonary embolism).
