Disability Home Care Services-Take Control of Your Life

DISABILITY HOME CARE SERVICES

It is the right of everybody to be free to pursue anything they want to in life, to see and do exciting things and experience the best that life has to offer.

It is no different if you are a person living with a disability. Feeling part of a community and having an active social life is a great way to improve self-esteem and quality of life. There is no point in sitting back and letting time pass waiting for the right moment to try something new. Maybe you haven’t fully considered what you want to get out of life so you may want to consider how these questions apply to you:
• What is most important to you now in your life?
• What do you most enjoy doing?
• What things are you happy with in your life now that you would like to stay the same?
• What isn’t working for you and what would you like to change?
• What’s stopping you from having what you want now?
• What help and support do you need to be happy?

Once you have considered these questions, the next step may be to find out what is available to you to help you live the life you want.

It can be liberating to know that as a person living with disability, the choices you have to pursue your goals and dreams are almost endless and with the introduction of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), the power you have over those choices is greater than ever before.

The NDIS-Empowering Choices for People with a Disability

If you are an Australian under the age of 65 with a permanent or significant disability, you may be eligible for a range of disability support services that will be provided in line with your goals, objectives and aspirations as a participant under the NDIS.

Under these guidelines, there are a range of support services to help you successfully perform daily tasks and live that life that you wish and the support you can receive can be divided into the following categories:

Assistive Technology

This includes anything that helps you do a task that you may otherwise be unable to do safely or at all. This could be a mobility cane, a non-slip bathmat, a wheelchair, a talking watch, a bed rail or a hoist just to name a few of the things you may be eligible to receive.

Home Modifications

These are changes to the layout, structure or fitting of your residence to enable you as a participant to move about with ease and safety. This may also include assistance with moving to suitable premises if it is not cost effective to modify your current dwelling.

Employment

Provides participants with individualised assistance with finding work, maintaining work or securing work. This also includes assistance in increasing your employability through relevant training and education.

Vehicle Modifications

This relates to any modification or adjustment that allows you to get in and out of your car without a wheelchair, carry your wheelchair in and on a vehicle without lifting, be transported safely while sitting in your wheelchair and being able to drive a vehicle with special controls or changes.

Prosthetic Limbs

This encompasses funding for entry level prosthesis, repairs, maintenance, adjustments and ancillary costs.

Personal Care Supports

This includes but is not limited to assistance with personal hygiene, toileting, bowel and bladder management, menstrual care, showering, getting in and out of bed, dressing and undressing, cleaning, dusting, vacuuming, light gardening, monitoring or stocking pantries, assistance with applying splints or taking medication, help with cooking, help with eating and drinking and help with using assistive technology.

It could also apply to respite care if your regular care giver cannot always provide you with care themselves or need to take a break.

Recreation

Recreation covers support for any activity, pastime or hobby that is conducted for enjoyment or leisure. It must contribute to your health and well-being, self-esteem, community participation and enhance your skills, capabilities and general enjoyment of life.

This could include things as diverse as the purchase or adjustment of sporting equipment and supplies, assistance with changing in and out of sporting clothes or assistance in going to events in line with your life goals and aspirations. This could be to sporting events, school concerts, cooking classes, dancing classes or even to meet friends for a meal at the pub!

Sustaining Informal Supports

In special circumstances such as for reasons of personal dignity or religious or cultural sensibilities, family members or other care givers may receive assistance to provide care.

Transport

As a participant, you can receive transport to events in line with your goals and aspirations that cannot be reasonably supported by the community or other means.

This may also include training for and assistance in accessing and using public transport.

As you can see, there are a multitude of choices available to you that give you the power to fulfil your goals and live a rich and fulfilling life.  However, it can be difficult and confusing to understand all of the options available and the rules and regulations on what you can receive.
